Change Stripe Account Country: Moving Subscriptions

Stripe locks an account’s country once it is activated. Open a new account in the new country, then move customers and subscriptions without double charges.

Can You Change a Stripe Account's Country? What to Do Instead

No. Once a Stripe account is activated or has processed a live charge, its country cannot be changed. If you need to change your Stripe account country, you open a new Stripe account in the new country. Your customers and saved payment methods can be copied to the new account. Your subscriptions cannot. They keep billing in the old account until you move them.

When Stripe locks the country

Stripe's help page Account country can't be changed after activation lists five conditions. You cannot change the country if:

  • The account is activated.
  • The account has an authorized live-mode charge.
  • The account uses a shared legal entity.
  • The account has applied to use Atlas.
  • The account is a connected account without access to the full Dashboard.

If any of these apply, Stripe's guidance is clear: "If you need to change the country, you must create a new Stripe account."

If you mistyped the country on a new account that is not yet activated, none of these conditions may apply yet. Check with Stripe Support before creating a second account.

Set up the new account first

Transferring the whole Stripe account is only possible within the same legal entity. A country move means a new account.

Each Stripe account can only be associated with the tax ID and legal entity of one business. Open the new account in the new country with the correct entity. The new account must be activated before Stripe will copy data to it.

If a buyer in another country acquired the business, Stripe's own steps are: transfer ownership to the new owner, the new owner opens an account in the new country, and the new owner asks Stripe Support for a data transfer. If you are the buyer, the acquirer checklist covers what to require from the seller on the Stripe side. If the entity is not changing, just the owner, read how to transfer Stripe account ownership.

Tax registration and Stripe Tax settings in the new country are your responsibility.

What comes across and what stays behind

Stripe's Customer Data Copy moves customers and saved payment methods between accounts. Customer IDs stay the same after the copy. Payment method IDs change.

It does not move products, prices, billing meters, subscriptions, subscription schedules, invoices, or coupons. After the copy, the new account has customers and their saved cards, but zero subscriptions. The old account keeps billing.

One point that every other guide leaves out: Stripe cannot copy Bacs Direct Debit (UK), Canadian pre-authorized debits (ACSS), or SEPA stored as Source objects. Customers who pay with one of these methods will need to provide new payment details in the new account.

Stripe's copy guide states no rule about accounts in different countries. Confirm with Stripe that a copy works for your account pair before you set dates.

Move the subscriptions in the right order

The subscriptions stay in the old account until you recreate them in the new one. Getting the order wrong causes a double charge (both accounts bill the same period) or a lost renewal date (the customer pays too early or gets free days).

  1. Recreate the products and prices the moving subscriptions use in the new account.
  2. Copy the customers with Stripe's Customer Data Copy.
  3. Create one subscription schedule per subscription in the new account. Set the start_date to the old subscription's current_period_end. That is the date the customer already paid through.
  4. Leave any subscription renewing within 48 hours. Let it renew in the old account first, then move it after.
  5. Read every schedule back. Verify the start date, the price, and the customer.
  6. Only after every schedule is verified, set each old subscription to cancel_at_period_end.

Why cancel_at_period_end and not an immediate cancel? By default, cancelling a Stripe subscription takes effect immediately. cancel_at_period_end instead lets the subscription complete the period the customer already paid for. Each old subscription ends in the source account at the same moment the new schedule starts in the destination account.

For the full step-by-step, read the runbook to migrate Stripe subscriptions to another account. For a closer look at timing, read how a double charge happens during a Stripe account transfer.

What your customers will notice

The charge now comes from the new account. It may show a different business name on the customer's statement. Stripe warns that a name the customer does not recognise can lead to a dispute. Tell your customers before the first renewal in the new account. Customer messages are your responsibility.

Coupons are not copied. If a customer has an active coupon, re-apply it in the new account. Otherwise the customer renews at full price.

Customers whose payment method could not be copied (Bacs, Canadian PADs, or SEPA Source objects) need a link to add a new one in the new account.

Keep the old account open until the last period ends

Subscriptions set to cancel at period end keep running until the date the customer already paid for. You can reactivate a subscription at any time before the period ends.

Stripe recommends keeping the source account as a backup of your data. Close the old account only after every source subscription has ended.

Doing it with SubPorter

SubPorter moves the Stripe Billing side of a country move. One person can run both seats when the same founder owns both accounts.

The source account stays read-only until the destination is verified, using three restricted keys. Subscriptions renewing within 48 hours are flagged. Subscriptions without a usable default payment method go to manual review. The cancel step opens only after the schedules are verified.

$99 for up to 100 subscriptions, $199 above. One-time, not based on MRR.

Invoice-billed and trialing subscriptions are set up by hand. Past-due subscriptions need fixing first.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I change the country of my Stripe account?

No. Once a Stripe account is activated or has processed a live charge, its country cannot be changed. You must create a new Stripe account in the new country and move your customers and subscriptions there.

Do my customers have to re-enter their cards?

In most cases, no. Stripe's Customer Data Copy moves saved payment methods to the new account, and customer IDs stay the same. However, Bacs Direct Debit, Canadian pre-authorized debits (ACSS), and SEPA stored as Source objects cannot be copied. Customers who pay with these methods will need to provide new payment details.

Do my subscriptions move with Stripe's data copy?

No. Stripe's Customer Data Copy moves customers and saved payment methods. It does not move products, prices, billing meters, subscriptions, or subscription schedules. You must recreate the subscriptions in the new account as subscription schedules, each starting on the original renewal date.

How do I avoid charging customers twice during the move?

Create one subscription schedule in the new account for each subscription, starting on the source subscription's current_period_end. Verify every schedule. Only then set the source subscriptions to cancel_at_period_end. Each subscription ends in the old account at the same moment it starts in the new one.

When can I close the old Stripe account?

After the last source subscription has ended. Subscriptions set to cancel at period end keep running until the date the customer already paid for. Stripe recommends keeping the source account as a backup of your data.
